NEWS ITEM: Ave Maria recital – THIS SUNDAY
11th September, 2020
We are very delighted to invite everyone to our very first recital following the COVID-related closures in the community.
Each year, the Cathedral salutes Our Lady, its Patroness, for her birthday by throwing its doors open and welcoming everyone to a very special recital programme featuring, in particular, the Cathedral’s organists.
This year we are also including in the programme young Joshua Crestwell – a student of the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Jacinta Jakovcevic
Joshua is eleven and plays the pipe organ, piano, archlute, banjo, banjola, ukulele and mandolin. He has been playing in church since he was six. Joshua loves playing the pipe organ in the Cathedral because it sounds great and he loves playing for God.
He has performed at Government House, for the Perth Symphony Orchestra, at St George’s Cathedral, with the South West Philharmonic Orchestra and at festivals. Joshua has won 40 first prizes including for his own compositions and arrangements, and won Most Outstanding Junior Instrumentalist and overall Most Promising Artist.
Our programme also includes fir the very first time in recital our newly appointed Organ Scholar, Xavier Jarvis. Xavier is studying music at the University of WA having just completed Year 12 last year at Chisholm Catholic College.
The programme also includes our assistant organists Pia Schelfhout, Alessio Loiacono and John Beaverstock; and our Vocal Ensemble will also sing some short items. Our very own cantors, Emma Oorschot and Grace Feltoe will sing Schubert’s sublime Ave Maria from both ends of the Cathedral accompanied by both pipe organs – a truly unique ‘surround-sound’ experience !!
