Thank you for expressing your desire to have your child celebrate their First Reconciliation or First Penance at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The celebration of Penance is an important part of their preparation for First Holy Communion and normally takes place in Year Three. It speaks of the repentance which is integral to the Christian life and of the mercy of God which is from everlasting to everlasting.
In order to help your child understand the significance of this occasion, it is, of course, necessary for them to complete a period of preparation and formation. If your child attends one of our Catholic schools, the preparation is usually undertaken at the school. If this is not the case, it will be necessary for your child to undertake a formation programme in one of our local parishes. Please contact our Cathedral parish office at your convenience to discuss the options open to you. There will also be a period of immediate preparation undertaken at the Cathedral, including a parent-child workshop and a day’s retreat.
If you are interested in having your child celebrate their First Reconciliation at St. Mary’s Cathedral, we invite you to please contact the Cathedral parish office using the enquiry form below. One of our parish secretaries will happily contact you to have a conversation with you about your hopes for your child’s First Reconciliation, and share with you some of the hopes and expectations of the Church.
