NEWS ITEM: Voices of angels resound through Cathedral

August 22nd, 2019

The Cathedral Concert series continued on Sunday 18th August with its second installment for the year: titled ‘Voices of Angels’ this concert featured the voices of our youngest choristers (trebles) in a programme of music ranging from chant to a contemporary Mass setting.

Cathedral Cantor Emma Oorschot

Britten’s ‘Missa Brevis’ was one of the highlights of the programme – written by Benjamin Britten in 1959, this piece is a showcase of treble singing involving some rather difficult passage-work and interplay between the 3 treble parts. With its attractive presentation of musical ideas and innovative use of harmony this piece is very exciting to sing – and to listen to !!

Our treble soloists sing during the concert

Another highlight of the afternoon was the solo singing of some of our choristers (some as young as 9 years of age) both in the hymn medley with which people could sing along with and a rendition of Howard Goodall’s ‘The Lord is my shepherd’.

One of our young choristers, Leonardo Tanner commented that ‘I really liked singing my solo at the concert, and I like to sing with the choir too.’

Richard Offen joined us as guest compere

Well-known Perth historian Richard Offen was our guest compere for the afternoon providing a commentary including some very entertaining and informative anecdotes. Also joining our line-up was Cathedral Assistant Organist Pia Schelfhout (who accompanied the choir and played a rousing rendition of Boellmann’s ‘Toccata’ from the ‘Gothic Suite’) and Cathedral Cantor Emma Oorschot singing some well-loved soprano solos.

Our next concert is the ‘Ave Maria recital’ on Sunday 8th September at 2:15pm celebrating Our Lady’s birthday.

Admission free.
