Orchestral Mass 2018 a resounding success

29 July, 2018

The Cathedral’s annual Orchestral Mass took place this morning at the 11am Solemn Sung Mass.

This year, our Orchestral Mass featured the largest orchestra assembled since this event’s inception in 2015 – and also featured the largest number of schools represented with the welcome addition of some new schools.

The repertoire featured the ‘Missa Benedictus Qui Venit’ of George Palmer and ‘Our Lady of the Southern Cross’ of Geoffrey Abdullah both written for World Youth Day 2008 (Sydney).

The enthusiasm and energy of our young students was evident throughout the rehearsals which took place during the week and culminated in the actual Mass this morning producing some very polished, expressive and very prayerful music-making. Many proud parents and family members were present in the full Cathedral as well as staff members from the participating schools.

Our Associate Conductor Dr Nicholas Bannan noted that it was wonderful to see students from various schools chatting to each other as they arrived and prepared for the Mass: ‘Everyone worked very hard in a mature, sociable way creating a really nice atmosphere. We’ve been doing this for 3 years and we seem to be developing a confident of team of younger and older musicians working together creating a team to make this event possible.’
