Christmas thoughts from our choristers

December 14th, 2018

As the Cathedral’s Music Programme prepares for the celebrations of Christmas, here are some thoughts from some of our youngest choristers:

‘I am celebrating my second Christmas here St. Mary’s.  From last year’s experience I know that Christmas here at the Cathedral is brilliant, the music is wonderful and fits this grand event. Whilst being at St. Mary’s I have grown in faith a lot and I now feel that I have a stronger connection with God. We are currently in our Lady’s Novena, which is a time for us to prepare for Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception and we need to remember to dedicate these nine days to her especially!

Music-wise I have really developed. Before coming to St. Mary’s I was a really shy singer and wouldn’t really sing much, but that all changed when I came to St. Mary’s and with Jacinta’s guidance and help I am looking forward to many more years at the Cathedral!’  – Zachary Gosatti

‘I’ve very much enjoyed my time at St. Mary’s. We are preparing for the 8th of December, Our Lady’s feast day. Since it is my first year, I’m surprised about how much beautiful music there will be and the amount of preparation we do for this event. It is a very exciting experience, considering Christmas is supposed to be even bigger with even better music.

Thanks to the choir, I have also become closer to God by going to Mass every Sunday, by taking in the church’s messages and by listening in with the prayers.

Cathedral Choir means a lot to me because I have somewhere to use my voice. I have learnt some good tips for life and have become closer to God. I am very happy that I’m in the Cathedral Choir and I can’t wait to continue.’ – Bowie McCabe

‘My experience of Christmas at St Mary’s Cathedral has been a very positive and enjoyable one. It has allowed me to use my music abilities to praise the birth of Jesus. I have sung at five Christmas Masses at St Mary’s and each year has been filled with new and exciting music that challenges my abilities and pushes me to work harder for Jesus.

In the last two years my voice has been undergoing a lot of change – I’m currently a tenor.  This allows me to sing new music and has opened a new angle by which I can praise God.

The Cathedral means a lot to me. I see it as a way I can use my musical talent to praise God and as a place where I can sing old and new music with like-minded people.

Music at St Mary’s has helped me develop and explore my faith. Through the music sung at the Cathedral I have been able to create a deep and personal relationship with God.’ – Deon Fonseka
